Stand Out: Illuminating Brands and Spaces with a Growing National Presence
The Hotel Balmoral
We received an exciting opportunity to offer a variety of sign removal services to a local sign company. Our team was specifically requested to remove the projecting sign from the well-known Balmoral Hotel situated in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. We are honored to have been selected for this significant project and were committed to delivering outstanding outcomes
Scope
Tops Lighting offered a comprehensive suite of services in addition to sign removal, ensuring a seamless and safe operation. Our extensive range of services included:

-
Policing: We coordinated with local law enforcement to maintain order and security around the project site. This ensured the safety of both our workers and the community.
-
Security Fencing: To secure the work area and prevent unauthorized access, we installed robust security fencing. This measure protected both the equipment and the passersby, maintaining a safe perimeter around the site.
-
DC Line Covering: Our team ensured that all direct current (DC) lines were adequately covered and insulated, eliminating any electrical hazards. This step was crucial for the safety of our crew and anyone in the vicinity of the project.
-
Transit Approval: We worked closely with transit authorities to obtain the necessary approvals for the project. This included coordinating with public transportation services to minimize disruptions and ensure smooth transit flow during the sign removal process.
-
First Aid: Safety is our top priority. We had trained first aid personnel on-site, ready to respond to any medical emergencies. This ensured that immediate care was available in case of any incidents.
-
Traffic Management: To manage the flow of traffic around the project site, we implemented comprehensive traffic management plans. This included setting up detours, signage, and directing vehicles to ensure minimal disruption and maximum safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
-
And More: Our commitment to providing exceptional service extended to various other aspects of project management. This included environmental safeguards, community liaison officers to handle public inquiries, and coordination with utility companies to manage any service disruptions.
By offering these additional services, Tops Lighting ensured that the sign removal project was executed efficiently and safely, with minimal impact on the community and the environment. Our holistic approach demonstrated our dedication to excellence and our capability to handle complex projects with the utmost professionalism
Special Considerations
In addition to the standard procedures for sign removals, we had to take extra precautions to minimize the impact on the community for a recent project.

The hotel in question holds very strong negative memories for a vulnerable group of residents in the poorest ZIP code in Canada. Recognizing the potential emotional and psychological impact on these residents, we approached the project with a heightened sense of responsibility and sensitivity.

To ensure clear communication and transparency, we distributed notices several days in advance. These notices provided detailed information about the project, including the timeline, scope of work, and safety measures in place. We also set up a dedicated hotline and community meeting sessions where residents could voice their concerns and ask questions. Our team was committed to providing thorough and empathetic responses to all inquiries, ensuring that the residents felt heard and respected.

Understanding the logistical challenges, Tops Traffic Control collaborated closely with the city authorities to secure the work area in front of the hotel. This involved obtaining the necessary permits and coordinating with various city departments to ensure a smooth operation. Given the sensitive nature of the location, we took additional measures to minimize disruptions.

One of the critical tasks was to manage the area where individuals were living on the sidewalk in front of the hotel. We implemented a soft relocation strategy, which involved engaging with the affected individuals respectfully and compassionately. Working alongside social services and community organizations, we helped facilitate temporary accommodations and support for those being relocated. This approach ensured that the relocation process was as humane and minimally disruptive as possible.

To further secure the site, we installed fencing around the work area. This not only ensured the safety of our crew and equipment but also protected the residents and passersby. We maintained clear and open pathways around the fenced area to minimize inconvenience to the community.

Throughout the project, our team remained vigilant and adaptive, ready to address any unforeseen issues that might arise. Our goal was to complete the sign removal efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of community care and respect
Lead Abatement
During the initial assessment of the sign, it was discovered that the paint contained lead, necessitating special removal and handling procedures to ensure safety and compliance with environmental regulations.

Recognizing the serious health risks associated with lead exposure, we implemented a comprehensive plan to address the lead contamination. Our approach involved multiple steps, each designed to minimize the risk to workers, residents, and the environment.

First, we conducted a thorough risk assessment to identify potential hazards and determine the most effective removal strategy. This involved consulting with environmental health experts and adhering to guidelines set by regulatory bodies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

We assembled a specialized team trained in handling hazardous materials. These experts were equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, gloves, and full-body suits, to prevent lead exposure during the removal process.
Our team received additional training on lead safety protocols, ensuring they were well-prepared to manage the risks.

To contain the lead dust and debris, we set up a controlled work zone around the sign.
This area was sealed off using heavy-duty plastic sheeting
